Ripping DVD's in Linux
1. Download and install the AcidRip software and the encoders. In Ubuntu:
sudo apt-get install acidrip sudo apt-get install mencoder mplayer
2. Go to Applications→Sound and Video→AcidRip DVD Ripper
3. Type in the path to the dvd drive and click Load on the right hand side.
4. You will have to give each chapter on the dvd a unique filename. Choose a filename and click Start and it will rip the chapter to an .avi file in the directory specified.
5. To combine the contents into one .avi file, issue the command: (Example file names used)
cat avi_file1.avi avi_file2.avi ... avi_fileN.avi > final.avi
6. This can create synchronization issues between the sound and the images so run this command to fix it:
mencoder -forceidx -oac copy -ovc copy final.avi -o final_release.avi
7. This may not play well on all players but I tested it with VNC and it worked. Seems like a good solution since VNC is available on most operating systems.
